Layoffs.fyi counted 133,217 tech layoffs between January and 15 October 2026, already more than in the whole of 2025. For graduates in India the way in has narrowed most: fresher hiring in Indian IT fell from about 600,000 in FY22 to about 120,000 in FY25, on Xpheno's figures. At the same time, companies still pay millions a year for tools that watch their own systems.
The open-source alternatives, Prometheus, Grafana and Ansible, cost nothing to download. Running them well takes engineers who know how, and those engineers are harder to find than the software. Our full article on aiiqlabs.com works through that gap with sourced figures and a lab you can run on a laptop:
- what the 2026 layoff and hiring figures say, and five popular claims checked against the evidence;
- what Splunk and Datadog cost, with a break-even calculator to test open source against your own numbers;
- the open-source observability stack, and an honest comparison with the commercial tools;
- a lab that turns a Prometheus alert into an automatic fix with Event-Driven Ansible;
- a 90-day plan for freshers, and how to switch jobs safely when layoffs are in the news.
